Who you are agreeing with
Fonterie is published by Maor Shushan, an individual. In these terms, “we” and “us” mean him, and “you” means whoever is using Fonterie. Using the site means accepting these terms; if you do not accept them, do not use it.
What Fonterie is
Fonterie is a self-serve tool for making fonts. Today it builds them from handwriting: it prints a template sheet and reads back the one you filled in, or takes a photo of handwriting you already have, and traces the letters. A drawing editor lets you draw a glyph from scratch or correct any outline by hand. It exports an OpenType (.otf) file you can install, and an install profile that puts the font on an iPhone or iPad.
All of that runs in your browser. Detecting the page, tracing the ink and compiling the font happen on your own device, which is why a sheet or photo you give Fonterie is never uploaded anywhere — not to us and not to anyone else. Once it has been traced, the image is discarded; it is not saved, even locally.
Who may use it, and accounts
You need to be 16 or older to hold an account. Fonterie works in full without one, so if you are younger than that, use it signed out — everything except syncing between devices behaves identically.
Signing in works by a six-digit code sent to your email address. You are responsible for the address you give us and for anything done through your account. Tell us at contact@fonterie.com if you think someone else has got into it.
Your work stays yours
Your source material — the handwriting, sheets, photos and drawings you give Fonterie — the outlines you draw and correct, and the fonts you export are yours. We claim no ownership of any of it, and we do not acquire a licence to use it, show it, publish it, or train anything on it.
The only permission you give us is the narrow one needed to run the feature you asked for: if you turn cloud save on, you are asking us to store your projects and hand them back to you on your other devices. That is the whole of it.
What is stored, and where
On your device, always
Your projects are saved in this browser’s own storage — the glyph outlines, spacing, kerning and font metadata, and nothing else. A theme preference, the cloud-save setting and your choice of language are kept alongside them. Clearing your browser’s site data deletes all of it, and there is no copy anywhere else unless cloud save is on.
In an account, only if you switch it on
Cloud save is off until you are signed in and have turned it on. While it is on, three things reach our infrastructure:
- your email address, which is what an account is;
- an index row for each font — its name, style, how many characters are drawn, timestamps and a content hash — which is what the library list is drawn from;
- the project itself, compressed and stored as a private file: the same outlines and metadata your browser holds.
Both are fenced to your account at the database level, so no other signed-in user can read them, and the file store is private rather than served from a public URL. We can reach them, in the sense that any operator of a database can; we do not read them, and nothing in the product does anything with them beyond handing them back to you.
Who else is involved
Accounts, the database and the file store are run on Supabase, which processes this data on our behalf, and the sign-in emails are sent through Resend. The site itself is served by our hosting provider, which sees the ordinary request information any web server does. The typefaces the site is set in are served from this site, not from a third party.
We do not run advertising, analytics or tracking, and we do not sell or share your data. The privacy notice says the same thing in brief, with how to delete what is stored; between them, this clause and that notice are the complete account of what is collected and where it goes.
Fonts you make
A font you export from Fonterie is covered by the Fonterie Personal Use Licence 1.0, which is free for personal, non-commercial use and requires a separate licence for commercial use. Every exported file carries that licence in its own metadata.
That licence is the counterpart to Fonterie being free. If you need commercial rights, they are available — write to contact@fonterie.com.
What you must not do
- Give Fonterie source material you have no right to use — someone else’s handwriting without their permission, or a typeface you have no right to reproduce. Fonterie is for your own work.
- Use Fonterie to make a font that infringes someone else’s copyright, trademark or other rights, or to imitate an existing typeface closely enough to pass for it.
- Break into, overload, probe or interfere with the service or the accounts of other people, or try to reach data that is not yours.
- Use Fonterie for anything unlawful, or to produce material that is unlawful.
Fonterie itself
The site, the software behind it, the name and the look of it are ours or our licensors’. These terms give you permission to use Fonterie as it is offered; they do not transfer anything in it to you, and they do not give you the right to copy it, resell access to it, or run it as your own service.
Early software, and keeping your own copies
Fonterie is early software under active development. Features change, formats change, and a stored project may need migrating to keep being readable. We take care over it, but we do not promise the service will be available, uninterrupted, or free of bugs, and we do not promise to keep any particular feature.
There is no backup service. Cloud save exists so your fonts follow you between devices; it is not a guarantee against loss, and neither is your browser’s storage, which a cleared cache will empty without warning. Export the fonts you care about and keep the files.
Deleting your work, and ending your access
You can delete any project from the library at any time, which removes it from the device and, if it was synced, from your account. “Delete my account”, in the account menu, removes the account and every project stored with it; if you cannot use it, ask at contact@fonterie.com and it will be done. Fonts you have already exported are files on your own computer and are unaffected.
We may suspend or end access to the service, or to an account, if these terms are being broken or if the service is being put at risk. Except where that is not practical, we will say why.
No warranty
Fonterie is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties about it, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement, and we do not warrant that a font it produces will be accurate, complete, or fit for any particular use.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profit, lost work, lost data, or business interruption arising out of Fonterie or these terms. Our total liability in connection with the service will not exceed the greater of what you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or ILS 500.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. The date they took effect is at the top of this page, and a change that materially affects you will be announced in the app before it takes effect, not applied quietly. Continuing to use Fonterie after that is how you accept the new version; if you would rather not, stop using it and, if you want, delete your account.
Governing law, and language
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Israel, and the competent courts of Tel Aviv-Yafo have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of them. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of any mandatory rules of your own country’s law.
These terms are written in English, and this English text governs. A Hebrew translation is published beside it; where the two differ, this text prevails.
